Being a teenager can be hard enough, but teens who struggle with depression have a harder time than most. It is important to be able to identify the signs of depression in your teenager so you can get them the help they need as early as possible to help them achieve their goals and help them be happier. Approximately 20% of teenagers will experience depression and this number has increased by 37% since 2005. By having the ability to spot the signs of depression in your teenager you will be able to help them when they need it most; some of the symptoms of depression in teenagers are as follows:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Irritable (exhibit anger over small things)
  • Issues with concentration, thinking, or making decisions
  • Thoughts of suicide, death, or dying
  • Feeling worthless, hopeless, or empty
  • Social Isolation
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or social activities
  • Drop in school attendance and grades
  • Self-Harm
  • Start using alcohol or drugs

One issue many school-age children suffer with is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and it can affect both their learning and social development so it is important to have it diagnosed and treated early to make sure your child has the tools to do their very best in school. Some ways to help your child adjust to the back to school routine without causing their ADHD to worsen can include the following:

  • Calendar- Set up a calendar so your child knows what to expect and when, make sure to include fun activities like birthday parties, shopping trips, movies, along with homework due dates, test dates, and extracurricular activities this way your child can have a clear understanding of what is expected of them and when.
  • Visit Teacher(s) – It is important to make sure you visit your child’s teacher or teachers with them so that they can have an understanding of what is expected of them while at the same time meeting them one on one and you can discuss your child’s ADHD so you can work together to take the appropriate measures to ensure your child has a good school experience.
  • Organization- Organization alleviates anxiety especially in children with ADHD, be sure to help them keep everything from their school locker to their bedroom as organized as possible so they can concentrate on learning and not be distracted.
  • Learning Goals- Be sure to set learning goals for your child and make sure they are a part of the process and once they are established be sure to post them on their calendar and create rewards (even small ones) to reinforce proper behavior.
  • School Central- Be sure to set aside an area of the house where you can post your calendar and keep all school-related paperwork, books, computer, etc., so your child has an organized place where they can go to see what they need to accomplish as well as allowing other members of the family to help them achieve success as well.
