“Larkin and Lacey Speak Out – What Happened to Joe Arpaio” is a sad statement about the political climate today. It appears as though people are more apt to get away with blatant acts of racism and cruelty now it is in the ever were before. Instead of being forced to answer for his crimes Joe Arpaio has been pardoned by the president of the United States.
Thereby adding a stamp of approval on to his previous actions and his refusal to adhere to the terms of the Melendres V. Arpaio ruling. Public figures like Denmark and Michael Lacey are not at all surprised that Joe Arpaio is not going to be called forward answer for the many atrocities that he has overseen.
The reason that Joe Arpaio was facing jail time is that incurred a contempt charge by not adhering to the terms that were outlined in a settlement for a class action lawsuit centered around him and his police department’s actions. Joe Arpaio was the acting Sheriff for Maricopa County police department for many years. One of the major ways that he found to set himself apart from other sheriffs was to take a stance that was very tough on the immigrant population. Instead of working to find ways to help this part of the population he instead found ways to push against them. He caused pain and suffering for many individuals through his racial profiling and stereotyping. After the ruling, he did not adjust his behavior or report for the mandated supervision.
Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey had a unique run in with Joe Arpaio that resulted in their own imprisonment. The imprisonment was of course unlawful. It violated their human rights because the arrest was based solely on information they had printed in their paper about a subpoena which had been issued from the Maricopa County Police Department. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey believed that Joe Arpaio was using the subpoena as an excuse to snoop through their records. They were arrested when they discussed their suspicions with the public. The imprisonment did not last long, less than a month, but the damage was done.
Larkin and Lacey were not hesitant to file a lawsuit against the Maricopa County Police Department immediately. They knew that if they did not act that Joe Arpaio would continue his reign of tyranny unabated. It seems as though even if Larkin and Lacey did when $3.7 million in a lawsuit against him he still continues to get away with his crimes. Is there hope that they can use this money to help fight against Joe Arpaio and his will.
They used it to set up the Frontera Fund which is dedicated to helping the immigrants that are located in Arizona with various difficulties. The specific focuses of this fund are supported by this group of people as they endeavor to fight for their own human rights. Even though Joe Arpaio may have gotten away with his crimes he will never take away groups like this nor the spirit that helps find them.
